Life's Lessons Ebb and Flow

Sometimes it seems like the lessons God teaches me are like being in the ocean. Often it is a constant and steady wave reminding me of truth. Then there are the huge waves that knock me off my feet, God’s character revealed in new ways through people and circumstances.


Sometimes there are the waves that come when my back is to them pulling me under the water so hard that I can’t tell which way is up, a discovery of sin that reveals the evil in my heart and God’s amazing grace that draws me back. Grace is not cheap. It is not to be given out as a license to sin, but to change our hearts so that we might not. Through sin we experience more of God’s grace, but in experiencing more grace we are impelled to not sin. The struggle is still there, but the desire and love for God helps me choose wisely.

Paul explains this like this:
What shall we say then? Are we to remain in sin so that grace may increase? Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life. – Romans 6:1-4
